What Is the UK Private Life Route?

Also known as the Appendix Private Life route, this immigration option allows individuals already living in the UK to apply for permission to stay based on their private life ties to the country, under Article 8 of the ECHR. Eligibility is determined by specific life stages and residence history, rather than family or work routes.

According to the official Home Office policy, you may qualify if you:

  • Are under 18 and have lived continuously for at least 7 years, with no reasonable expectation to leave the UK
  • Are aged 18 to 24 and have spent more than half your life here
  • Are 18 or older with 20 years of continuous residence
  • Are 18 or older, have lived fewer than 20 years but would face very significant obstacles upon return
  • Were born in the UK to a parent already granted (or applying for) private life permission

How Long Do You Get, and What’s the Path to Settlement?

  • Initial leave is typically for 30 months (2.5 years).
  • In certain circumstances (e.g., young people under 24 who meet criteria), permission may be granted for 60 months (5 years)—providing a faster path to settlement.
  • Adults without those youth concessions are placed on a 10-year route to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

Why Legal Expertise Matters for Private Life Cases

The Private Life category is one of the most nuanced and sensitive routes:

  • Evidence of continuous residence, dates, and context are critical.
  • You must demonstrate the reasonableness of your stay and the hardship of returning.
  • Missteps can lead to refusal, appeal complications, or human rights violations.

At Haleys Solicitors, our in-house barristers bring strategic advocacy and deep expertise:

  • Comprehensive evidence gathering and case construction
  • Tailored accommodation of your life story
  • Fast-track solutions where applicable
  • Full BSB-regulated representation and appeal readiness

Do You Meet The Minimum Requirements Of The Visa Type That You Want To Apply For?
Answer The Questions Below To Get Your Results.

Are you over the age of 18?

In the UK, a legal presumption exists that entitles anyone to enter into a contract unless an exception applies. One of those exceptions is in the case of a minor. Since 1969 the age of contractual capacity for individuals has been set at 18 and reaching the age of 18 is known as attaining 'majority'. Minors are therefore those who have not attained the age of 18.
