What Is a Sponsor Licence & Why Do You Need One?

A UK Sponsor Licence allows employers to hire individuals from outside the UK by issuing them a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)—such as for Skilled Worker roles. Without one, hiring skilled talent that requires a visa is not possible.

Is Your Business Eligible to Apply?

To apply, your business must:

  • Be genuinely registered and operational in the UK (e.g., with Companies House, HMRC, evidence of trade)
  • Have no unspent relevant criminal convictions (e.g., fraud, immigration offences)
  • Demonstrate capability to manage sponsorship, including HR systems and infrastructure

Application Process & Required Documents

  • Apply online via GOV.UK and pay the licence fee (£536 for small/charitable; £1,476 for medium/large)
  • Submit key documentation (Appendix A), including: proof of trading, HR policies, nominee documents, submission sheet signed by an Authorising Officer
  • Establish your Key Personnel: Authorising Officer, Key Contact, Level 1 User—all senior and UK-based staff

Sponsorship Duties & Compliance

Once approved, you must:

  • Use the Home Office Sponsor Management System (SMS) to issue CoS
  • Comply with HR and immigration duties (e.g. record changes, report absences, maintain documentation)
  • Be prepared for compliance visits and audits—non-compliance can lead to licence suspension or revocation

Common Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them

Standard mistakes include:

  • Incomplete or inconsistent documentation
  • Lack of adequate HR systems or record-keeping
  • Using a new company solely to sponsor, especially in vulnerable sectors (e.g., care)—this has resulted in revoked licences and hardships for sponsored workers

Do You Meet The Minimum Requirements Of The Visa Type That You Want To Apply For?
Answer The Questions Below To Get Your Results.

Are you over the age of 18?

In the UK, a legal presumption exists that entitles anyone to enter into a contract unless an exception applies. One of those exceptions is in the case of a minor. Since 1969 the age of contractual capacity for individuals has been set at 18 and reaching the age of 18 is known as attaining 'majority'. Minors are therefore those who have not attained the age of 18.
