What Is the UK Ancestry Visa?

This visa allows Commonwealth citizens aged 17 or over, who can prove at least one grandparent was born in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, or (in the case of Ireland) before March 1922, to live and work in the UK. It’s a practical route to settlement and eventual citizenship when used wisely.

Eligibility Criteria You Must Meet

You must demonstrate that all of the following are true:

  • You’re a Commonwealth citizen
  • You’re aged 17 or older when you apply
  • You have a grandparent born in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, or pre-1922 Ireland
  • You plan and are able to work in the UK
  • You can support and house yourself (and any dependents) without accessing public funds
  • You meet any additional visa conditions (e.g., biometric data, application fee, healthcare surcharge)

Duration, Rights & Path to Settlement

  • The visa is valid for five years and allows you to live, work, and study in the UK
  • After 5 years, you can apply to:
  • Extend your Ancestry visa for another 5 years, OR
  • Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) if eligible
  • Time spent on this visa counts toward the British citizenship residency requirement (following 12 months of ILR)

Applying and Extending Your Visa

  • Apply from outside the UK using the appropriate online form
  • Pay the visa fee and healthcare surcharge, and provide biometric information
  • To extend, apply before your current visa expires – usually with identical eligibility criteria
  • Note: You cannot “switch into” this route from other visa types

Bringing Family Members

You can bring:

  • A spouse or civil partner, OR a partner with a demonstrably committed relationship (typically 2 years’ cohabitation)
  • Children under 18
They may apply at the same time or later, with valid dependent rights including work and study (but still no access to public funds)

Answer The Questions Below To Get Your Results.

Are you over the age of 18?

In the UK, a legal presumption exists that entitles anyone to enter into a contract unless an exception applies. One of those exceptions is in the case of a minor. Since 1969 the age of contractual capacity for individuals has been set at 18 and reaching the age of 18 is known as attaining 'majority'. Minors are therefore those who have not attained the age of 18.
