What Does “Self‑Sponsorship” Mean?

There’s no standalone “self‑sponsorship visa.” Instead, entrepreneurs can establish or acquire a UK business, secure a Skilled Worker sponsor licence for that business, and then have it sponsor them for a Skilled Worker visa. Essentially, you bring yourself to the UK through your own company.

Can You Sponsor Yourself for a UK Visa?

Yes, provided you can set up or already own a genuine, active UK company, obtain a Skilled Worker sponsor licence, and assign yourself a Certificate of Sponsorship for a real job at the appropriate skill level—enabling you to live and work in the UK as a Skilled Worker.

Key Requirements You Must Meet

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Have a UK company that’s genuine and trading lawfully
  • Successfully apply for a Skilled Worker sponsor licence
  • The job must be at the correct skill level and paid at or above both the minimum salary threshold and the ‘going rate’ for that occupation
  • Pay any Immigration Skills Charge
  • Assign yourself a valid Certificate of Sponsorship
  • Meet the English language requirement (CEFR B1 or higher)
  • Show you can support yourself without relying on public funds
  • Provide a criminal records check or TB test, if required
  • Demonstrate business legitimacy, including a functioning HR framework and, potentially, a business plan

Path to Settlement (ILR)

Once on a Skilled Worker visa via self-sponsorship, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five continuous years of lawful residence, subject to satisfying all ILR conditions.

Answer The Questions Below To Get Your Results.

Are you over the age of 18?

In the UK, a legal presumption exists that entitles anyone to enter into a contract unless an exception applies. One of those exceptions is in the case of a minor. Since 1969 the age of contractual capacity for individuals has been set at 18 and reaching the age of 18 is known as attaining 'majority'. Minors are therefore those who have not attained the age of 18.
